A perfect family experience and a true must-see during summer holidays in and around Avoriaz, a visit to the famous “Goat Village” is a not-to-be-missed stop for anyone staying in Haute-Savoie.
The village of Les Lindarets, located in the Aulps Valley, was renamed thanks to the goats that roam freely through its streets, looking for treats and a little affection from visitors. In summer, they bring the village to life throughout the day, parading through Les Lindarets and the surrounding alpine pastures to the sound of hooves on cobblestones. Warm, welcoming, and authentic, the Goat Village is a perfect snapshot of traditional mountain life in Haute-Savoie.
Originally an alpine pasture hamlet, Les Lindarets welcomed shepherds and their families every summer up until the 1950s. The village chalets were built for practicality above all, showcasing traditional alpine architecture — their roofs are still covered with wooden shingles called "tavaillons", typical of high-altitude mountain buildings.
As tourism in Morzine and Avoriaz grew, many of these original chalets were gradually converted into restaurants and cafés catering to visitors. Today, the goats that roam the village belong to a shepherd based in Morzine, who brings them up to enjoy the fresh mountain air during the summer months.
Mountain holidays are a fantastic opportunity for kids to connect with nature and animals. At over 1,400 meters altitude, with breathtaking views all around, children can feed the goats themselves (treats are sold in the hamlet). The goats, well used to humans, are gentle, love to pose for photos, and will happily accept a tasty reward in return.
The walk through Les Lindarets is suitable for everyone — families with children, couples enjoying a romantic getaway, or retired visitors who love the mountains. All will enjoy the charming sight of goats strolling freely, often making visitors step aside to continue on their way!
A visit to the Goat Village is filled with smiles and laughter — but it’s also a chance to dive into the local culinary traditions of Haute-Savoie. Many restaurants feature sunny terraces where you can watch the goats go by while sampling regional specialties.
And of course, don’t leave without stocking up on local cheese (including Savoie tomme and, naturally, goat cheese!) and browsing the charming souvenir shops around the village.
The drive to Les Lindarets is an experience in itself, offering stunning mountain views. If you choose to drive, you’ll find free parking areas near the hamlet. Note that since summer 2022, the road is one-way during the summer season — it can only be accessed downhill from the Col de Joux-Verte. Only bicycles and vehicles with a disabled parking permit are allowed in both directions.
The Goat Village is also accessible by bike from Morzine or Montriond — a great way to combine sport with a well-earned terrace break. Cyclists can take the blue Brochaux trail within the Portes du Soleil area, then follow the road for a few minutes from Chaux Fleurie.
For a more relaxed option, hop on the Ardent gondola and enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and alpine meadows. This lift brings you directly to the heart of the Goat Village and its culinary delights. Be sure to download our Avoriaz piste map to locate the lift at any time.
Looking to combine a family hike with some goat-time? Start your walk from Lake Montriond and head toward Les Lindarets. Be sure to stop at the Brochaux waterfall along the way — a peaceful natural haven that’s well worth a break.
In winter, the goats head down to warmer ground, and the village becomes a ski-through destination. Looking for more ideas? Explore our suggestions for family activities in Avoriaz and the surrounding area.
